Grand Valley Rowing Finishes Season at Spring Lake
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007The frost covering the regatta site upon arrival was fitting for the 2007 Spring Lake Frostbite Regatta on Saturday. Nevertheless, crews from Grand Valley and Michigan State came together for a series of sprint races to finish off the fall season and start getting ready for the spring.
Boats in both the men’s and women’s flights raced in a total of four races: a 2000 meter head race, and 1500m, 1000m, and 500m sprint races.
Four Grand Valley and two Michigan State women’s boats were the first to race. Grand Valley 1 took first place overall after winning the 2000, 1500, and 1000 meter events. Grand Valley 3 claimed the second place spot after winning the 500 meter dash and second place finishes in the 1500 and 1000. MSU 1 held their position in the third place spot where they finished all but one race.
On the men’s side, it was Grand Valley’s second varsity that came out victorious in a flight of five Grand Valley crews and four Michigan State crews. Winning 3 of 4 races put them ahead of their Grand Valley 1 counterparts. Grand Valley 1 took second place after taking 1st in the 2000 meter head race and 2nd in both the 1500 and 1000. As in the women’s raced, Michigan State 1 kept a consistent 3rd place in three races and overall.
The Grand Valley rowing team will now head indoors for winter training as they look forward to a spring even more successful than the fall.
