New Season Starts Strong
Tuesday, October 18th, 2005On Saturday, Oct. 8th, the GVSU men and women raced at the Columbus Crew Classic, starting their season strong and beginning a new era under coach John Bancheri. We took home the team points trophy, our first since he arrived as the Laker’s head coach.
To begin the day the men’s A pair won their race in 20:06 and were followed by the D pair. The B, C, and E finished 5th, 6th, and 7th, respectively. Later on the women’s B pair also won with a time of 22:01 and were followed by the A pair. The C and D pairs took 4th and 5th.
In the open four’s, the women’s A boat took their race with a time of 20:42.2. The C and B fours took 4th and 5th while the D four came in 9th. The men’s A four came in second by a slim 1.1 second margin with a time of 18:23.9 and were followed by the B and C fours at 3rd and 4th.
In the novice eights, the women’s A boat took second with a time of 21:47 while the B boat came in 3rd and the C boat 5th. The men’s B and A boats took the top spots in their race while their coach, John Palk, won the men’s open single.
Strong winds over a wide open course created wake and made the course very difficult to row. Throughout the day the winds worsened, which led to race officials calling off the rest of the regatta.
The Lakers will be at home in Grand Rapids next weekend for the Grand River Challenge. They will race at Riverside Park against other teams from the area.
