Lakers show strength at SIRAs

Last weekend GVSU competed in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association’s championships regatta. Facing powers from the south, such as Texas and a variety of Florida schools, the Lakers performed well, showing their strength and that they are almost ready to make some noise next month at the Dad Vail Regatta.
In the V 8s, the women made a strong run for the Lyden Cup but came up three seconds short to Barry University, 7:03-7:06. The men placed third in the B final after coming close to beating out Texas for the last spot in the A final. The second women’s eight also placed fifth in the B finals.
The novice made a splash for the Lakers, with the women’s eight coming in second for the Lindamood Cup behind only the College of William and Mary. The men’s eight claimed second in the B final, finishing only two seconds behind the University of Cincinnati. The women’s four came in fourth in their B final. austin isd cloud
The Laker men also had a lightweight four competing in the heavyweight division since the SIRA rules would not allow them to row lightweight.
Overall, GVSU improved leaps and bounds over last year’s performance, when the men got last in V 8 and the JV 8 and the women finished fifth in the V8.
The Lakers will have these next two weekends off as they prepare for the Dad Vail Regatta on May 12 and 13.
